Heat Pump FAQs

An Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) runs at a lower flow temperature to enhance efficiency and runs at 50*C instead of 80*C meaning the radiators are cooler to the touch and are designed to gradually heat the building over a continuous period. We advise an ASHP is run continually at lower temperatures rather than on/off cycling as it is not a form of instant heat like a gas boiler.

It is possible to set a timer on this system, however it has been advised by the manufacturer not to use the timer setting. Using the timer will affect the performance of the ASHP and will also make the thermostat redundant. As the thermostat will be redundant this could cause faults on the system as the thermostat is connected to the ASHP controller. If the controller is telling the system to do one thing and the thermostat telling the system to do another, this will cause the unit to fail. It is advised by the manufacture for all residents to control their heating with the thermostat only (Turn it up when cold, turn it down when too hot).

The ASHP units do make a very small humming sound. However, when stood in front of the unit you will find that you can’t really notice the noise. At the design and survey stage, a sound calculation is completed. For a contractor to install a unit this MUST pass the sound calculation. This takes into consideration neighbouring properties, any surface for the noise to bounce off magnifying the sound, and the location of the unit. This is in line with permitted development rights and approved by town planners as an approved and accepted method similar to applying for planning permission.

There are the same number of pipes as any wet central heating system, this would be the same for any other fuel type. The pipes are larger as they must have a higher flow rate because the system runs at a lower temperature than a conventional gas or oil boiler system. The larger pipe sizes allow for increased volume of water and increased flow rates to aid the lower flow temp and efficiency of the overall system.

It is advised not to turn the system off as itis designed to run constantly. You are advised instead to turn the thermostat down to between 16C-18C. Turning the system onand off will cost more as the energy being used to heat up will be more.

There is also a holiday option on the system which if used will set the temperature to 10C for the length of time set. This will stay at 10C to ensure no moisture builds up within the property which eliminates the risk of mould etc. This option is on the control panel.

The pressure will only need to be topped up once a year which will be done when a service engineer comes out to service the ASHP. At no point should the resident have to top the pressure up themselves. THIS IS ONLY TO BE DONE BY A QUALIFIED ENGINEER AND NOT A TENANT OR END USER

8. Supported by government grant schemes and funding

CCS usually design the radiators to be bigger than the existing ones so the actual decorating requirements are somewhat diminished, however you may wish to paint pipes after installation. CCS do not redecorate but will make good and fill any holes from the installation leaving the surface ready to paint.
